Losing your head going round the bend?
Cornering presents the biggest challenge to young drivers because there simply isn't room in the current driver training regime to include expert training on the finer points of taking bends. The driving test is just the beginning. You then start to gain experience of the wider range of traffic and road conditions which you simply cannot be expected to have experienced by the time you pass.
In rural areas, crash statistics show that loss of control during or after negotiating a bend is the biggest factor affecting young driver crashes.
This is how to avoid losing your cool in the corner.
Cornering Technique
One of the biggest myths amongst young drivers is that to maintain speed and to go faster round a bend, you need to zoom into it as quickly as possible. In fact the opposite is true. If you go into a bend more slowly, you can accelerate through the curve and the car grips the road better and there is less chance of the car changing course and ending up in the hedge.
Physics and gravity want the vehicle to travel in a straight line. Your job is to put the car in a position where gravity and physics can't take over control of the car.
If you are honest with yourself, you can probably agree that you have had a few "that was close" moments whilst trying to get round a bend.
Remember this: Slow in, fast out.
Get the speed right before the bend, and accelerate through it
